Sime Darby Plantation today announced the publication of our oil palm genome research that has paved the way for us to produce significantly more oil palm yield on our existing land.

  • Accelerate researchers' ability to increase oil palm yield
  • More detailed gnome sequence markers for higher yield
  • Potential increase palm oil yield with 20%
  • In line with our journey for a deforestation-free industry.

Our ambition of halting deforestation in the palm oil industry

The genome sequence that we will be sharing in this publication is 80% more detailed than any findings that have been publicly available previously and is the result of over a decade of research led by our Chief Research and Development (R&D) Officer, Dr Harikrishna Kulaveerasingam.

SDP has invested over RM150 million into R&D since 2009 and established one of the biggest genotyping labs in Southeast Asia. With the publication of the research, other researchers will also be able to learn from the results and this will get us closer to realising our ambition of halting deforestation in the palm oil industry.

“We have been fortunate in being able to take pioneering research from the lab and put it to work in the plantation, and then prove its potential with the fruits of our first commercial harvest. We believe that breakthrough innovations can up the game for productivity in the industry - and sharing the genome can save scientists years in their own research,” said Dr Harikrishna.
